Heritage pastured raised pork! We raise Berkshire pigs, a heritage breed dating back 300 years from England that is prized for its good marbling and darker, moister meat. In Japan, Berkshires are highly prized and called Kurobuta due to their rich marbling, tenderness, flavor and are often called the “Kobe beef of pork.”
Our customers, as you can see in some of the reviews, love the pork. The meat is really special and even the fat is distinctly better than that from a commercial hog. Pork chops, ribs, tenderloin, roasts, bacon and a lot of excellent sausages all come from a side of pork plus lots of other goodies. A half will weigh between 90-110 pounds providing plenty of tasty meat for you and your family.
Our pigs have been raised on pasture and other forage while getting plenty of sunshine and exercise. They have been raised in a humane manner without antibiotics, chemical de-wormers or other treatments.
While growing to weight, they have been fed hog grower food which is a balanced diet to suit their needs. They grow fast and need a lot of fuel. Of course they supplement their food with grass, trees, leaves, bugs and anything else they can chew being true omnivores. To finish our hogs we feed a custom blend of feed made up of Oats, Barley, Corn, Alfalfa pellets and Sunflower seeds with boiled eggs a couple of times a week during the last 2 months. They also receive plenty of apples and vegetable garden treats as often as we can provide them. This blend ensures they are healthy, don’t put on too much fat before being processed and adds a delicate flavor to the meat.
Cost is $5.99 a pound hanging weight which included cut wrap and freeze (normally sold as $4.99 a pound plus $1 for cut wrap and freeze) with extra costs for sausage making and curing using the bellies to make bacon, see “Sausage and custom processing” below. The $50 deposit is to secure your side and details will follow when you complete your order. Note that the deposit is not refundable.
Delivery as south as Victoria can be arranged for a fee.
